AGM/Strategic Planning roundup

The QLGRA held its AGM in Bundaberg on 13 September 2014.  The meeting saw attendees from a wide range of districts come together and discuss their mutual concerns in relation to amalgamated councils.  The majority of Management Committee members first elected in July 2013 were returned for 2014/15.  Bob Johnson of Stanthorpe continues on as Chair with the addition of a second Vice Chair in Troy Garland from Capella.

Mr Johnson gave an interesting Chair’s report on the activities of the Alliance for the past 15 months, particularly drawing attention to the state government’s continued intransigence in relation to re-visiting the 2007 council amalgamations.  It continues to hold the view that the heavily pre-conditioned review process it conducted in 2012-13, in granting only four councils the right to de-merge, fulfilled its 2012 election promise to review the amalgamations.

The meeting heard an inspiring and supportive speech from key note speaker, ex-Federal Member for Hinkler Paul Neville.  He made some constructive suggestions including seeking a senate inquiry which have been readily accepted by the committee.  A change to the  rules of association was ratified whereby the membership of the Alliance has been streamlined to ordinary group members, associate group members, and associate individual members.  Associate group members had their annual fee increased to $50 per annum but have been granted two delegates with equal voting rights as ordinary group members.

The afternoon session was devoted to regional roundups and discussing future strategies centred around political activity, community involvement, and media activity.
